Everything That Rises

I often talk to my clients about how things tend to get stirred up, painful, and uncomfortable when a shift needs to happen for our greatest and highest good. Years ago, I experienced a rough breakup, developed a chronic illness, and suddenly lost a beloved pet, all of which led me to get real about my life. I ended up changing careers in order to do what made my soul sing. I would have never made that shift if life hadn’t gotten rough, forcing me to look at things and know a change needed to happen.

Right now things are being stirred up to a grand, horrific scale in the country and the world. Illness, financial struggles, inequality, and violence from those we should be able to trust are all threats to our most basic survival. Because the stakes are so high, it gives us no choice but to look at it and know things have to change.

Ever since the George Floyd murder, the protests, and riots, the phrase “everything that rises must converge” has been in my head. It’s the title of a Flannery O’Connor short story I read in school, on the theme of racial inequality and prejudice. What I forgot is that the phrase comes from the work Omega Point by French philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin:

Remain true to yourself, but move ever upward toward greater consciousness and greater love! At the summit you will find yourselves united with all those who, from every direction, have made the same ascent. For everything that rises must converge.

Yesterday in my morning meditation when I connected with Mr. Big, the horse I worked with in Costa Rica, he took me to my memory of observing his herd. I had been blown away by how all the horses worked together, intuitively connecting and knowing when each one would take turns serving as lookout, leader, nurturer, etc. It’s how the herd survives—by respecting each other and working together. All the horses in the herd looked different—varied-patterned coats, colors, and sizes. Each were individuals with a unique personality, but they all knew that working together, supporting others, and seeing each other as equals was the way to thrive.

I agree with Teilhard de Chardin in that we are here to grow, learn, and evolve (all of us, coming “from every direction”). Disconnection, destruction, and mistreatment of each other, the earth, and animals has been going on forever. We can’t keep going down this path if we’re really meant to expand our souls. We’ve reached our Omega Point. The universe is asking us to clear the wounds and create a new normal. Be better in the ultimate way.

Here’s to us seeing the truth and living the change...and hopefully becoming a lot more like Mr. Big, Cosmo, Beauty, and all of their equals. ❤️
